Carrie Herndon, a former engineering teacher, had an idea for a maker space, where anyone, young or old, could come and create.
During the pandemic, she finally had the time to make her dream a reality.
In December, she opened The STEM ZONE Maker Space. The shop enables those without prior experience to work with lasers to create anything from a puzzle to a Christmas ornament. Her clientele varies from moms having a wine and cheese night to grandparents and grandchildren, she said.
“There’s an edge of science with design and an edge of creativity,” she said. “It’s a craft shop on steroids.”
“We’re a space that is super user-friendly,” Herndon added.
For her work on the shop, at 7805 Highlands Village Place, Herndon received the Innovative Leader Award on June 24 at the Poway Chamber’s 2022 Business Star Awards.
