Three years ago, civil unrest stemming from the murder of George Floyd destroyed the south Minneapolis home of MIGIZI, a nonprofit organization serving American Indian youths. The youth center, at 3017 27th Ave. S., was at the epicenter of the unrest.
MIGIZI had been there for a mere eight months.
“Our whole side of the street burned,” Kelly Drummer, president of MIGIZI, recalled in an interview. “To watch it burn down was terrible.”
Drummer is ready to put those bad memories aside now that the organization is settling into its new solar-powered building at 1845 E. Lake St. MIGIZI — which means “bald eagle” in Ojibwe — purchased the building in January 2021, brought it up to code, built an addition and recently moved in.
“Being here make me feel like that’s over,” Drummer said of the 2020 events.
