Architects Group2, and Patkau Architects, teamed up to bring the 12,000 square-foot Edmonton Public Library to life. The design is comprised of three “zones”, which run parallel to each other. The zones incorporate flexible spaces for the community and staff including private and semi-private meeting rooms, study spaces, and a Makerspace focused on technological capabilities and equipped with a 3D printer and additional digital tools. The library is estimated to be able to serve almost 200,000 visitors annually.
Reflecting the surrounding environment, interior ceilings are clad in timber that is accented with long, thin vertical lights. A mix of rectangular and polygonal ALPOLIC metal panels from Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings form the library’s exterior cladding in a striking black that creates a beautiful juxtaposition against the wood ceilings.
