‘Roadrunner News’? Edgewood ISD fifth-graders produce it daily.

In many ways, the broadcasting studio at Perales Elementary School is like any other newsroom — a noisy space filled with camera equipment, bright lights, backdrops and hardworking journalists.

But instead of briefcases and workbags, there’s a collection of colorful backpacks sitting behind the scenes. Drinking chocolate milk, not coffee, the anchors are often fueled by sugar rushes, not caffeine kicks. 

That’s because the reporters, editors and producers are not newsroom veterans or eager college graduates. They’re fifth graders.

“I wanted to be a part of this because I felt like I could do so much to help the school,” said Mark Alvarez, 10. “It’s not just talking on the speakers, which is boring. …When you do it on video, it’s more exciting.”
