MakerSpace and dog training may sound like unusual ways to promote literacy, but Memphis Elementary School librarian/tech teacher Meran Khon is ready to channel these tools into expanding student reading in the 2022-2023 school year.
“Our primary focus is for the library to be a place where students associate reading as a pleasurable activity, surrounded by books they find interesting and appealing,” Khon said. “We reorganized our collection by genre, author and series for student interest and visibility. Student feedback is gathered frequently for topics, themes and authors/series they are interested in reading and learning about.”
In July, Khon was awarded a $100,500 Innovative Community Library Grant to expand literacy initiatives at Memphis Elementary, located at 34165 Bordman Road in Memphis.
