A 35,000-square-foot “super rec” center has opened in the South Baltimore neighborhood of Cherry Hill.
The $23.1 million facility, which includes three pools, basketball courts, a maker space, fitness studios and an indoor walking track, is the largest city-owned recreation center, the mayor’s office and Baltimore City Parks and Recreation said in a news release. At full capacity, the center is able to accommodate 1,500 people, the release said.
City and state officials cut the ribbon Wednesday at the Middle Branch Fitness and Wellness Center. A community celebration will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Located next to a new turf athletic field finished earlier this year, the fitness center is meant to serve as a “regional hub for recreation,” connected to outdoor pathways such as the Gwynns Falls Trail and the Middle Branch Trail.
