Ford Maverick, a smaller hybrid pickup truck, will get 40 mpg in the city and starts at $19,995

Ford dominates the truck market with its F-150, America’s best-selling pickup truck, and now it is seeking to become a leader in the market for smaller trucks as well with a new gas-electric hybrid version.

Ford debuted its Ford Maverick this week, which boasts an EPA-estimated rating of 40 miles per gallon city fuel economy and 500 miles of range on a single gas tank, making it the “most fuel-efficient truck on the market,” according to Ford. It would be the first full-hybrid pickup in the U.S. It will not be a plug-in hybrid. The Maverick is about 3 feet shorter in length and 7 inches lower than an F-150, Ford said.

Ford said the Maverick is “the truck for people who never knew they wanted a truck.”

Its starting price will be $19,995. It is expected to go on sale this fall.
