WAUSAU – The idea for the Wausau Makerspace came from Raspberry Pi.
Not the hot, straight-out-of-the-oven dessert, but a tiny computer, just a bit bigger than a quarter. Typically the small electronic chip is used to teach programming to students, but in Wausau, a group of friends used it to make stuff. For months, Brian Jojade and a group of friends had been using Malarkey’s Pub as a space to gather and put together different creations using the computer. But the group knew they needed more space and an innovative environment.
That’s where Justin Tetzlaff , a friend of Jojade’s, came in. Jojade’s group was advancing in skills and had even built a remote control car that drove itself around the bar. But the bar still wasn’t an ideal space to work on electronics. Tetzlaff introduced the idea to Jojade, who was immediately on board.
