CAMDEN — Camden Hills Regional High school is recognizing four Hatchery Innovation Center students who have won a national competition called The Energy Project through the Puranik Foundation. The foundation works with students to create sustainable energy technologies and awards a grant to the winners to bring their innovations to market.
The winning team, Maggie Blood, Tula Bradley-Prindiville, Olivia Huard, and Laura Riordon, developed sustainable sea floats and buoys made from mycelium – root-like filaments of fungi – as an alternative to polyurethane foam. With the Puranik Foundation’s $15,000 award grant, the students founded a small business called Refoam Maine to produce their unique products. Additionally, the students were awarded a two-week trip to India.
