To cut down on landfill trash and greenhouse gasses, try upcycling

Mitra Gruwell, owner of Discard Upcycling, is working with Viking Sewing, Vacuum, Spa and Stove to create an industrial sewing and upcycling hub for Lane County. Upcycling is another method of waste diversion that Lane County Waste Wise is encouraging to manage textile and clothing waste.

Lane County is reminding residents that fixing up old favorites is a thoughtful way to give this Christmas.

WasteWise Lane County has provided a website of tips, tricks and makers to help make the most with the least waste this holiday season. 

“When you look through your trash, you’ll probably find discards that could be recycled, reused or repurposed,” the county wrote on the website.

WasteWise helps sort out what belongs where when it comes to garbage and recycling, and how to minimize what ends up in the landfill. 

Among the landfill pile, you might find clothes, blankets, toys and other textiles — even in an age when thrifting is trending. Textiles and clothes actually comprise a considerable amount of Lane County’s waste — nearly 11%, according to the 2016 waste composition report, the most recent information the county has.
