BELMONT —
Sept. 6 was the first day of school for many cities and towns throughout Massachusetts, but in Belmont, it was also a historic day because it is the official opening day of the newly completed, $295 million, grade 7-12, 451,000-square-feet, Belmont Middle and High School. Belmont Public Schools is one of the few districts in Massachusetts to have a school of this size (more than 2,000 students) and grade configuration.
There are 38 grade 7-12 schools in Massachusetts, some with fewer than 100 students, many of them with less than 500 students and very few with more than 1,000. The MSBA has helped fund 16 of these grade 7-12 schools in Massachusetts over the years, but none as large as the Belmont Middle and High School.
