For years in Whiteclay, a small village in Nebraska just south of the South Dakota and the reservation boarder, has had 4 liquor stores that sold so much alcohol, mainly to the Oglala Sioux. In 2017, the Nebraska officials forced the liquor stores to close which brought change. What was formerly known as The Arrowhead Inn, is now a safe space for Lakota artists to come to create or sell their artwork.
The Whiteclay Makerspace is a nonprofit organization that was driven to provide a place where Lakota artists and crafter can succeed with their skills and abilities to creatively carry their culture forward through their creative work. Artists are able to have access to tools, equipment, workspace, supplies, resources, and markets including the online store that is provided on their website.
