MANUFACTURED GOODS—Dave Gross, who donated $250,000 to Rancho Campana High School’s makerspace, holds some of the fidget spinners that students make in the high-tech workshop.

Some might have called it a charitable donation when venture capitalist Dave Gross invested $250,000 to launch a company run by teenagers. It was a way, he says, to give high school students an early start in the world of entrepreneurship.

But in just a few months, RCMakes, the nonprofit business Gross helped a group of students start this year at Rancho Campana High School, has earned enough in profits to “about break even” after deducting startup and insurance costs, he said.
