Kohler MakerSpace artist Patty Chang’s porcelain art shown at The Met

KOHLER – An artist who participated in a Kohler Co. artist residency program has art displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City through the summer.

Los Angeles-based artist and educator Patty Chang, who participated in the Kohler MakerSpace for nine months, will display “Abyssal,” part of the Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie exhibition, through Aug. 17.  

The exhibit, which opened March 25, reexamines the story of European porcelain with a feminist lens through nearly 200 historical pieces and works from contemporary Asian and Asian American women. It explores stereotypes of women, sexuality, race, culture and the East.  

Chang’s piece — an unglazed porcelain massage table with hole punctures — explores identity, transformation and societal expectations, recalling the labor of Asian women spa workers and the six women killed in a 2021…
