On a circular piece of wood, Melanie Winzenburg painted a hummingbird in blue and green to make an ornament for her grandma. The sophomore at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) was one of a number of students who took part in an annual holiday gift-making event at the university’s makerspace. It provided an opportunity to make gifts for friends and family in a space that has equipment and supplies for completing all sorts of hands-on projects. “We’re broke college students, so just … to have a time where we can do something that’s meaningful but also in our budget range is really nice and takes that weight off of the expectation,” she said.
