Creating a PDF from InDesign’s Print Booklet Feature: A Postscript

As I was taking a fresh look at David Blatner’s post about making a PDF from Print Booklet as part of CreativePro’s efforts to keep our site fresh and useful, I heard from an old friend and colleague, Luke, who was at his wit’s end with the same feature.
Luke, who runs the maker space at a nearby college, was advising a student, Maggie, who was preparing a zine project for printing. Print Booklet left both of them stumped. They could only get files that would crop the right half from the tabloid pages for Maggie’s letter-sized final folded zine.

"Spread 1 of 8 - Pages(16, 1)" noted on what appears to be a single PDF page of a comic book.

The back cover (page 16) of Maggie’s project appears on the PDF from the file that Print Booklet created. The right-hand side of the same page should be the front cover (page 1) but the document emerged cropped at the spine.

Luke got in touch to see if I had any better ideas.  At the time, I had nothing I could offer them but…
