Lithophane workshop at the library’s Makerspace illuminates photos

The Hutchinson Public Library is offering a workshop for people to display photographs in a distinct way. The images are called lithophanes and they are considered works of art and feature a textured surface printed on a 3D printer at the library’s Makerspace area. To see the final image, a light is placed behind the photographic image.

Makerspace specialist Bret Thomas will be conducting the workshop. He has asked participants to bring photos, either digital or print, to the workshop to make a lithophane printed from the photo. If time runs out, people can visit the Makerspace at a later date to finish the project.

The lithophanes are created by using colored filament in a 3D printer. This happens after a photograph is prepared in computer programs lithophanemaker.com or itslitho.com. The 3D printer layers the filament in different strengths with thinner and thicker areas to make…
