ST. CLOUD — Macanon “Mac” Dhein didn’t have a shop class in high school.
After the St. Cloud native finished school at Cathedral, he bounced around for six years, dropping out of college and spending time in the Navy.
If it wasn’t for his father, who was a pipe fitter, Dhein still might be doing temporary jobs or working in a factory, he said.
Now, Dhein is a union pipe fitter and owner of Make It Mac’s Makerspace, a community workshop that opened in 2021.
“Makerspaces” are places where people can gather to work on projects, and share tools and ideas.
There are a handful of makerspaces throughout the state, with a majority in the Twin Cities metro, Dhiel said. Some of those focus more on technology or robotics, while Make It Mac’s Makerspace is more “meat and potatoes,” Dhein said. That includes woodworking,…
