Is it time for a local makerspace? – Fort Bragg Advocate-News

In 2009, I walked into the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, saying “Where is our local Hackerspace?” There wasn’t one, so we had to start one. It started off slowly, but before long became an active organization. The Makerspace Urbana celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2020.

I’ve now lived in Fort Bragg since January 2019.

There is the potential to do the same thing here in Fort Bragg. In fact, the Mendocino Coast Makers Guild has all of the elements available here to do just what the Makerspace Urbana did, only we don’t yet have the critical mass to support a brick-and-mortar physical organization. But we have the same collection of virtual organizations in the region right now that we had in Champaign-Urbana in 2009-2010.
