BETHEL — Although there are a few things left to complete, school officials and staff are happy with recently renovated Anna H. Rockwell and R.M.T. Johnson elementary schools.
“It’s 100,000 times better,” Superintendent Christine Carver said during a Wednesday tour of the schools on Whittlesey Drive. “Compared to what used to be, it’s like paradise.”
The Rockwell school for students in kindergarten through second grade and Johnson school for third- through fifth-graders were simultaneously renovated as part of a $65.8 million building project that was narrowly approved by taxpayers back in 2017.
Carver said the final cost of the two-school building project has not been finalized, but will come in under budget. A state grant is covering 45 percent of eligible project costs.
