NEW BUFFALO — Robotics season is about to begin.
The New Buffalo High School Bionic Bison and River Valley Mustang Gearheads are busy preparing their machines for the March 10-11 St. Joseph FIRST CHARGED UP competition.
“We’re a little bit behind schedule from where we wanted to be, but we’re making progress pretty quick on it,” said Bionic Bison mentor Darrick Fairchild during a Feb. 24 build session in the district’s new STEAM Building.
“Originally we started with a telescoping arm, and we just couldn’t get it to work. We kept changing it and changing it … and just decided on Tuesday (Feb. 21) we had to go in a different direction.”
That direction resembles what Fairchild described as “an old-style excavator arm using…
