City of Refuge in Columbia opens resale boutique in time for holidays

City of Refuge Development Director Dan Szy reviews a list of items refugee clients receive free during a brief tour this week of the nonprofit's new location at 10 N. Garth Ave. Because of the vast number of donations it receives, some gently used items now are sold from City Boutique, a resale store created by the organization to help support its mission.

What started as garage-sale-style fundraisers to support the mission of City of Refuge now is a fully-fledged resale shop known as City Boutique.

The store opened this week and sells gently used clothing for all ages, books, toys, home goods and seasonal items with sales going directly back to City of Refuge operations.

“There is more that we take in than we can give away (to refugee clients). … The best thing for us to do as stewards of the resources we have and donations we are given is to sell those for profit that we can turn that back into our programs. That is the vision,” said Dan Szy, development director.

City Boutique is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
