ARA presents ‘A Look at the History of New Hampshire’s Poor Houses’

DURHAM — The Active Retirement Association announces a free Zoom presentation on Feb. 6, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. featuring Stephen Taylor, who will speak about New Hampshire’s historical treatment of its poorest citizens. He will discuss how vague laws and compulsory taxes in colonial times led to the creation of alms houses and poor farms in many New Hampshire towns where the poor were subjected to horrid conditions.
