Carl who?
The Pine Bluff Aquatic Center was renamed in July 2022 to honor Carl A. Redus Jr., the mayor whose “Penny for Progress” tax campaign in 2011 was responsible for the city having the state-of-the-art pool.
Despite his name being placed on the structure — something then-Council Member Ivan Whitfield had to lobby hard for — there is nothing inside the facility that celebrates the dedication event or displays even a hint of why Redus was important to the creation of the pool facility.
The slight continues to be evident in the language used by Go Forward Pine Bluff in regard to the center. On a previous website of the nonprofit, which is hoping to get a sales tax passed on Nov. 14 (early voting starts on Tuesday, Nov. 7), Go Forward had a section that listed “Our Projects” and under that heading was a link for the aquatic center.
