Syd Birrell, the artistic director of Peterborough Singers, has teamed up with Trent University Continuing Education to present An Introduction to the Organ, taking place Dec. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Murray Street Baptist Church, 175 Murray St.

In addition to his role with Peterborough Singers, Birrell is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and has been the organist at Lakefield College School for 38 years. He will explain the inner workings of the Casavant Organ of Murray Street Baptist Church, followed by a summary of J.S. Bach’s early career.

Birrell will also perform several of Bach’s organ masterpieces, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (BWV 565), The Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor (BWV 582), and the Gigue Fugue (BWV 577).

This workshop is free to attend, but registration is required. Please visit trentu.ca/continuingeducation/ for more information.
