Rockford 5th graders test engineering processes in annual Maker Expo

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Fifth-grade students at Haskell Elementary in Rockford use engineering skills to research, plan and build projects for the 3rd annual Maker Expo.

On Thursday, teams of about 2-3 students presented their self-chosen projects at Haskell’s STEAM Academy, 515 Maple Street. The projects included a periscope, a volcano, roller coaster and more.

“I’ve had a lot of students this year saying they’re looking forward to continuing on in engineering,” Haskell STEAM Academy MakerSpace teacher, Katrina Olson said.

The Maker Expo challenges students to adjust plans, relate and apply lessons to real-life problems and learn about themselves throughout the duration of the projects.
