Harlandale Independent School District, where declining enrollment has led to a $12 million budget deficit, has begun a series of town hall meetings to talk about the potential closure and repurposing of four of its elementary campuses and one other facility.
An analysis shows that Columbia Heights, Morrill and Vestal elementary schools and the Jewel Wietzel Center, where the district teaches children with disabilities, are operating at about half of their capacity. Rayburn Elementary is at 60 percent capacity.
On Tuesday the district will hold a town hall meeting in the McCollum High School auditorium, located at 500 W. Formosa, to explain the proposed closures to parents. The district also is conducting a survey, available on its website.
