First settled in 1824, Farmington was later incorporated as a village in 1867 and a city in 1926. Until the 1950s, Farmington was a small village with limited ties to Detroit. Still, during the post-war building boom Metro Detroit consumed Farmington and the surrounding township, now known as Farmington Hills. Farmington Hills was incorporated as a city in 1973. Today the middle-ring suburban communities of Farmington and Farmington Hills are heavily connected with convenient access to nature, the northern suburbs, and the amenities and benefits of Detroit.
