Saturday morning marked the grand opening of the Makerspace at the Orillia Public Library.
Equipped with a 3D printer, a Glowforge laser cutter, a Brother SE600 Sewing and Embroidery Machine, and a Cricut vinyl cutter, the Makerspace has been popular since its soft opening late last year, according to library CEO Bessie Sullivan.
“It’s really a place where people can gather and be creative,” she said.
The idea for the Makerspace came from other libraries in the area that have similar creative spaces.
“It’s kind of an economy of scale,” Sullivan said. “That’s what libraries do a lot of because while most people may not be able to afford a $7,000 piece of equipment, the library can, and can provide that to everyone to use.”
She says the Makerspace will help local entrepreneurs who are starting new businesses.
