Maker Fair kicks off with science, crafts and hands-on learning for kids |

The Santa Maria Public Library on Saturday kicked off its first-ever Maker Fair, where kids and parents crowded into three rooms to learn the true meaning of “hands-on” through more than a dozen craft- and STEM-based projects they were invited to create.

The art of “making” has actually been a trend for several years now, mostly in large cities, and the fad is finally catching on and making its way down to smaller areas like Santa Maria, said Dawn Jackson, Librarian III of the Santa Maria Public Library.

“The point of a Maker Fair is to invite the community to come together to do fun, creative projects, which takes many different forms,” she said. “It can be craft-based, welding or even digital-based activities like music editing and coding, so there are lots of different directions making can go.”
