
STILLWATER — On a typical school day, visitors to Stillwater Township School can witness two opposite educational approaches in a pair of classrooms, often at the same time.
In one room, called a “makerspace,” students are abuzz with excitement as they use cutting-edge technology to solve problems. In another, a teacher guides students through poses and breathing techniques in a setting quiet enough to hear a pin drop.
While the school’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) and yoga programs may not appear too similar, both have one significant aspect in common: virtually universal enjoyment from participating students.
“This program, it’s been a tremendous addition to our school,” said STEAM director Elaine Makarevich on a recent tour through the makerspace, where third- graders worked together to program robots through a coding app on classroom iPads.
