Splinters-N-Rust owner Janice Richardson holds a sunflower decoration she painted with the Hutchinson Flag in the middle. She plans to teach students who sign up for her Apr. 16 Sunflower Door Hanger class how to do the same.

Splinters-N-Rust owner Janice Richardson recognized Ukraine and Kansas share multiple similarities. One of them is in agriculture. Both countries grow sunflowers.

The national flower of Ukraine is the sunflower, a Ukrainian symbol of peace.

Richardson wanted to show passion in some way, so she organized a sunflower challenge.

Richardson planned a class on April 16 where participants will follow her instructions on painting a wooden sunflower. She hopes these decorations will show support for Ukraine by decorating Hutchinson with the bright yellow flowers.

Richardson will also provide Take-N-Make sunflower kits, where participants can purchase the kit in-store and paint it at home while following along to a Facebook Live video she makes the day of the class.
