A few years back I read a book by Matthew B. Crawford called Shop Class as Soul Craft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work. As Harvey Mansfield of Harvard University said, “A superb combination of testimony and reflection … you can’t put it down.” I’ll attest to that.
By work, Crawford was emphasizing working with one’s hands; he deplored the elimination of shop classes in the majority of our high schools over the decades and linked that with the common misassumption that to work with one’s hands didn’t require much thinking.
