Ascension Episcopal students put creativity, problem-solving into action

Students in Ascension Episcopal School Upper School's Makerspace elective class were challenged to come up with an original design and bring it to life for their final project. Here, Cole works with his uncle on his welding art project.

Twelve juniors and seniors at Ascension Episcopal Upper School were tasked with identifying a passion and bringing it to life with an original design at the end of the fall semester.

In other words, it was final project time in the Makerspace elective class that has been offered at the campus in Youngsville for about five years now. 

“Students come to tinker, play, dream, build,” art teacher Jeni Guidry said about the course. “It’s a place where they can discover and build creativity.”

Guidry has led the class for three years, giving her students challenges throughout the semester leading up to this as their final. During the first quarter they were put in groups and asked to come up with their own game, crafting everything from the instructions to the logos.

Then they shifted to the passion project, which incorporates the skills they’ve been building in class and asks them to stretch…
