The concept of a makerspace is a popular one in the entrepreneurial world, and it’s taking a firm hold locally.
Makerspace centers and similar facilities are opening or being planned in Sioux Falls and other cities in the area.
The practical definition of makerspace varies, but the term usually refers to publicly accessible space where inventors, entrepreneurs and hobbyists pay a fee to go and use the facility’s equipment to work on projects. Activities such as classes commonly are held at makerspace centers, too.
In February, Brookings opened the first full-fledged makerspace facility in the region. Sioux Falls and Vermillion are among the cities discussing the possibility of opening makerspaces.
