Not everyone has a laser cutter in their basement, but the city library does—and volunteers will show people how to use it, too.
Grace A. Dow Memorial Library in Midland has been offering MidLab classes free of charge since April to anyone with a library card, said Jon VanDerhoof, graphic designer and maker lab specialist at the library.
“It’s been booming,” he said. “The program has gotten more and more popular because more people are figuring out about it, as well as wanting to come back and learn other things.”
MidLab was born when the library renovated its old offices in the basement into a maker space after the 2020 flood, he said, adding that the idea came from Library Director Miriam Andrus.
