SILVER CITY – Around the country, local “makerspaces,” shared workshops based at universities or local nonprofits, have mobilized volunteers and resources to help produce personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical personnel at the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Among them is the Future Forge Makerspace, a nonprofit based in an industrial building near downtown Silver City. Temporarily closed to the public amid the public health emergency, since March 30 a few volunteers have been busy marshaling the facility’s tools and technology to produce badly-needed gear for local providers.

Future Forge says it has already produced 300 plastic face shields for local healthcare facilities and, with increased production, has begun reaching out beyond Grant County.
