Brothers Liam McEwan, 15, left, and Conor McEwan, 12, solder an LED board which, when lit up, represents the stars of Matariki.

A creative community space is teaching people about Matariki and how to solder a constellation on a light board.

Blueprint Makerspace, based under the Palmerston North City Library on Te Marae o Hine-The Square, is a community area that helps people bring their imagination to life with free-use equipment.

Electronics wizard Zak Millar has been helping people young and old learn to solder on a build-your-own light board he designed to celebrate Matariki.

Complete with the correct names for the nine stars, recognised by Rangitāne, Millar developed the board as part of the Palmerston North City Council’s push to showcase the Māori New Year.
