
NEWTON TOWNSHIP – Maysville administrators are planning an internal investigation after a fire broke out at the high school last week.
On Tuesday, May 25, a student was sweeping sawdust under a piece of woodworking equipment when the sawdust caught fire, according to an incident report from the Newton Township Fire Department. That was in a small room connected to the library.
A staff member had already put out the flames with a dry chemical extinguisher by the time fire personnel arrived on scene at 10:14 a.m. All students were evacuated from the school.
Once the smoke cleared, the room’s set-up raised some concerns, according to Newton Township Fire Chief Craig Knox. Personnel noted the room was improperly ventilated, only had only one exit point and lacked a fire extinguisher.
