Austin Elementary is open for business.

Monday marks the start of the Abilene Independent School District’s 2020-21 school year and district leadership is excited students and teachers get to play with their new $20 million toy.

First impressions when you walk in the main doors?

Allison Camp, the school’s principal, said she received several comments from young students comparing the new facility to a Super Target store.

Actually, it’s bigger than the department store, but the red furniture in the library — which greets students as they enter — and the glossy red wall that rises two stories certainly aid in the comparison.

“It doesn’t look like the Austin Elementary I went to,” said Superintendent David Young, a Cooper High School graduate.

Families and students look at the Maker Space laboratory inside Austin Elementary School during Meet-the-Teacher night Thursday. This was the first time the students have been able to visit their new school, which took a year to build.

Next to the library is the school’s new “maker” space, equipped with a 3D printer, Legos and engineering gadgets perfect for young students.
