Extra-curricular classes popped up throughout Brandon Middle School this school year and students signed up in remarkable numbers.
Meghann Scott, gifted resource teacher, and Ellen Nesbit, instructional technology specialist, were driving back last summer from the 757 MakerSpace, a community workshop in Norfolk that offers training and open workshops on a variety of skills, when they decided to create the pop-up classes at the school.
Originally the idea was geared toward special education students and those on the advanced academic track.
“They can’t take fun electives or exploratory classes,” Nesbit said. “Sadly, some kids won’t ever get the chance to do these things.”
“These things” quickly grew into more than 50 classes including archery, cheerleading, make-up tips, model building, origami, soldering, Spanish dance and vision boards.
