It’s 3D, and it’s free — Middleboro shows off new Makerspace

MIDDLEBORO — A few months ago, it was just an idea.

Then Richard Oakley and a dedicated crew of volunteers put their heads together and made it happen.

They’re hoping to pass along that same creative, engineering spirit to Middleboro’s children with the fruit of their labor: a cozy new Makerspace in the Town Annex building that gives local kids a chance to learn about things like 3D printing, robotics and programming.

Oh yeah, and it’s free.

Oakley, a member of the School Committee, and volunteers showed off their new space (cleverly nicknamed “BoroBot”) at an open house Sunday night to dozens of visitors. The 3D printer was whirring, the CAD-CNC machine was milling out a pattern, and the room was abuzz with hopeful optimism for the new space.

Their first six-week session of classes (a test run with local students) is set to begin Wednesday.
